A few words
About Us
The Swapnil Majumdar Memorial Foundation
Our story
The Swapnil Majumdar Memorial Foundation has been established in the memory of Late Swapnil Majumdar who was only 22 when he succumbed to death following a month-long treatment at New Delhi on account of leukemia. His sudden disappearance and the sheer pain of that loss made us realize that we have to come together and plan for something constructive and productive to turn this grief into our strength, to extend love, compassion and empathy to children suffering from similar fatal diseases and the families that went through the huge trauma. Blood Cancer is the most common type of cancer among children and teens, according to the National Cancer Institute of the United States. India is also experiencing an increase in cases recently. As per Globbocan 2020 report, over 20,000 new cases of childhood cases have been reported in India, of which only 15, 000 cases (75%) have been Leukaemia.
Blood cancer refers to the malignancies of the blood, bone marrow or the lymph nodes that affect children and teens (0-19 years). The three types of Leukaemia among children are Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), and in rare cases Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML).
Cancer research has advanced manifolds over the past decade resulting in significant improvement in medical facilities. For the first time, USA has reported in 2021 curability rate crossing 50%. The positive impact on leukemia is even more heart-warming with curability at upwards of 90% of cases. Provided, it is detected early!
That is where the problem lies in India. Misinformation and lack of awareness are the biggest challenges observed today among the Indian population. Most people are unaware that Blood Cancer can be treated, and the patient can get a second chance at life. Whatever awareness exists, is limited to a few in tier-I cities. Unfortunately, the symptoms leading to leukemia are too common to some of the less serious childhood illnesses. This includes anaemia, bone and joint pain, frequent infections, headache, seizure, extreme fatigue, stomach-ache, breathlessness and bruises/bleeding. Most of the time, parents either ignore these symptoms or treat them with tactical remedies, without foresight of the wider ramifications. And in many cases, the symptoms may develop slowly, giving the patient and family a false sense of recovery. The Swapnil Majumdar Foundation, being established in the loving memory of Swapnil Majumdar, will focus on increasing the awareness of Blood Cancer across cities, towns, and villages in India.
Our Vision
Our vision is to generate consciousness among people so that Cancer can be detected early and treated at the pre-cancer stage. We would aim to reduce the suffering of people, especially the patients who undergo corrosive chemotherapy and related health hazards. We have to ensure that patients going through such treatment do not feel lonely and psychologically devastated. Similarly, the patient’s families also need a lot of mental support. The foundation plans to build an information bank consisting of doctors’ names, hospital contact details, networks of blood donors, and oxygen suppliers which would assist the caregivers during the stressful period of recovery of their loved ones. Overall, the foundation would like to ensure that there is no dearth of love, care, and compassion for people whose life goes through a tremendous transformation once Cancer is detected and a miserable battle with this disease sets in. We can make changes just by extending love in the world.
Our Mission
The foundation will work with educational institutes, hospitals and medical institutes, doctors, social organizations, spiritual leaders, and government agencies to conduct:
- Regular preventive awareness camps
- Blood/platelet donation camps
- Health check-up of children/teens

- Building repositories of Cancer Treatment Information
- Lifestyle Counselling
- Special Motivational Sessions with Spiritual Gurus/leaders
The Foundation will use digital mediums to bring communities together to share experiences and provide access to information about hospitals, treatment, updates on medical research and advancement, funding etc. We look forward to your support as we take the necessary steps over the next few months to bring to life the dream of Swapnil and their family.
